In the finals Saddleback faced host team Pateadores. The first half was hotly contested with an early goal putting Pateadores in front. Saddleback equalized right before half time with a goal from Lucy Almao.

In the second half Saddleback moved ahead from a tremendous individual effort goal from Sierra Salviati. Elizabeth Luna sealed the win late in the second half with a third Saddleback goal. Of special note was Saddleback United only gave up 1 goal throughout the tournament.

Congratulations to the team and to coaches Sara Aguilar and Andy Campbell for their early season success

U15 Strikers Win Irvine Memorial Classic 2008

Saddleback United Strikers (Girls '92), after having won the Bronze South Division to end their Fall campaign, have begun their new campaign with a Championship at the Irvine Memorial Classic.

The Strikers began the tournament with a gritty 1-0 result against Westside Breakers with a beautiful strike by Coley Joyce, and later in the day fought to a 0-0 draw with Brea Blaze.  The day ended with Strikers in command, in second place in the pool, on 12 points with one pool-play match to go.

Sunday's match against North County Pacific United was the hardest of the three pool matches with both sides' defenses working to another 0-0 draw.  The Strikers, with their 150 minutes of clean-sheet soccer, had secured their place in the final against RSM Storm SC.

The Championship match began with the Strikers attacking almost at will, and in the 15th minute, Nicole Matthews put Strikers ahead on a solid strike that rattled the right post on it's way in.  RSM Storm answered with a strike of their own in the second half, and with 10 minutes to play, we were all level once again.

Both sides pressed the attack, but at the end of regulation, it was 1-1.

RSM Storm SC and Saddleback United Strikers lined up, and the shootout began.  RSM struck first, then their keeper made a stunning save to put RSM ahead 1-0.  Strikers leveled the count at 2-2, with both goalkeepers being beaten by strong strikes.  RSM then missed their fourth attempt with Strikers burying theirs, providing for a 3-2 count.  RSM Storm SC then missed their next attempt, securing Striker's 3-2 shootout victory and the Championship.

Both teams had represented their Club well, and it was clear that RSM Storm SC had left it all on the pitch.  The match ended with each side's players congratulating each other for a well-played game.

Coaches Jaime Arroyo and George Castillo gave each of the girls their Championship medals while acknowledging each player's contribution to the result.  The day ended with Coach Jaime commenting to the girls that "this is the first of many" Championships for this campaign, and applauding their quality, commitment and work-rate.

Saddleback United Renegades play Nomads Coaches Showcase

Saddleback United Renegades (SBUR) recently had the opportunity to participate in the Nomads Coaches Showcase Tournament in San Diego, CA. This is a very prestigious tournament with top teams being invited from both within and outside of California. SBUR performed with distinction amongst an extremely talented bracket of teams.

In the first round the girls faced a premier team, Tracy FC from Northern CA; beating them convincingly by 2-0. In the second round SBUR faced another very tough team in LVSC from Las Vegas, NV. SBUR girls scored early and were unlucky to allow a tying goal with approximately 30 seconds left to play in the game (1-1). In the 3 round SBUR faced another team from Nevada SBSC Netrippers whom the beat 2-0.

With 2 wins and a tie the girls were all very pleased to be coming back on Monday morning (missing school) for the semi finals against LOSC Dynamite from Oregon. LOSC proved to be a very fast and physical team that pushed the SBUR girls to new levels of intensity within their own game. With approximately 15 seconds left in the game SBUR scored, putting them into the finals.

In the finals SBUR faced Cal Rush Nike, a gold team from Northern CA. SBUR girls played, by far, the most physically intense soccer of the tournament and showed they can compete with one of the top teams in their age group. SBUR scored early and after a first half where both teams played some outstanding soccer SBUR led by 1-0.

In the second half both teams continued to place each other under tremendous pressure with Cal Rush scoring an equalizer midway in the half, putting the game into overtime. The intensity of the game continued into the first overtime with SBUR scoring to go ahead 2-1. Cal Rush scored early in the second overtime from a terrific corner kick, evening up the game 2-2. With approx 3 mins left in the second overtime and two very tired teams continuing to push each other, Cal Rush scored the winning goal. The final score being 3-2.

The girls should be extremely proud of the way they performed in such a prestigious tournament. They played against teams that were all graded higher than them in their respective leagues and showed they can compete at any level. Congratulations to them and both coach Sarah Aguilar and Andy Campbell.

Saddleback United Teams Participate In Soccer Tennis Even
t

On March 9th The American Soccer Tennis Organization (ASTO) held it annual tournament in San Juan Capistrano.  The event was a great opportunity for our soccer family to have some fun together, and enjoy the beautiful spring like conditions.

Saddleback United was very well represented. The club fielded teams in the U12, U13 and U14 age groups, as well as 2 senior teams (coaches, managers, parents).  Soccer tennis is a rapidly growing sport that requires exceptional ball control, reflexes and strength. It was evident to all who watched that the overall ball skills of the Saddleback United girls are amazing, and competitive with any other players out there. Saddleback teams received medals for placing in almost every category.

It should also be mentioned that the club is proud of the sportsmanship and overall conduct of our players and parents throughout the day. A final mention must go to our coed coaches’ team (Jaime, Joy, Sarah, Andy) who won the senior coed section. It is always great to see the old “gals/guys” leading by example! Congratulations!

On behalf of the club thank you to all those who participated and helped to organize the event.

Andrea Hoffman Fundraiser

With the strong support of our families, Saddleback Coach Jaime Arroyo and Thomas Dooley of the OC Kings were able to raise over $8,000 to help cover medical expenses for one of OC’s top soccer families.  Saddleback had 11 teams and many volunteers to help make the soccer tennis event a great success…and great fun.  See OC Register article.

U15 Strikers Win Bronze Omega Bracket

U13 Renegades Win Copa Real Nike Invitational

Congratulations to our U13 Renegades who got their 2008 soccer campaign off to a tremendous start in Woodland Hills by winning the Copa Real Nike Invitational tournament.

The team went undefeated throughout the tournament scoring 7 goals, with 0 goals scored against them.

Particularly impressive was the teams win in the final against Santa Monica Soccer club 2-0.
Earlier in the season Saddleback lost to Santa Monica in the finals of the West Coast Futbol Classic by 3-0.

The final was an outstanding match with the Renegades showing just how far this team has progressed over the past season under the guidance of Coach Sarah Aguilar and Assistant Coach Andy Campbell.
