Saddleback United Coaching Staff

At Saddleback United, we are very focused on finding and recruiting coaches that can inspire a child’s passion for the game, teach the fundamental skills that will allow them to compete with confidence on any soccer field, and that can foster the development of strong personal character.

We believe that these key coaching attributes are the essential ingredients to develop successful soccer players that are skillful, self-motivated competitors with a life-long love for the game of soccer. We are extraordinarily proud of the coaching staff at Saddleback United. Each of our coaches has an exceptional ability to inspire passion, mentor character and develop soccer skills.

DIRECTORS


Joy Fawcett

Joy is the Technical Director for Saddleback United. Growing up in Huntington Beach, Joy was an All-CIF player for Edison High School where she still holds many of the scoring records. After high school, Joy moved on to the University of California, here she was a 3-time All-American and participated in two NCAA Final 4 Championships.

During her freshman year at Cal, Joy was invited to her first National Team camp which was the beginning of a 17-year National Team career in which she played in 238 games for her country that included two Olympic Gold Medals, two World Cup Championships and US Soccer Player of the Year in 1988. Although widely regarded as one of the best defensive players in the world, Joy was probably best known for being “the Ultimate Soccer Mom” as she raised three children while playing with the National Team.

In addition to a remarkable National Team career, Joy also coached five years at UCLA where she was named PAC-10 Coach of the Year in 1997 and she was a founding member and 3-time All-Star in the WUSA and 2003 Defensive Player of the Year. Joy retired from competitive play after the 2004 Olympics. In 2009, Joy was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame and in the same year, she and Cobi Jones became the first players inducted into the Cal South Hall of Fame. Joy was also inducted into the AYSO Hall of Fame in 2006.


Jaime Arroyo

Jaime is the Director of Coaching for the Saddleback United boy’s program. Growing up in southern California, he was as standout player with NHB Premier where is teams won State and Regional Championships. As an adult player, Jaime continues to be one of the best known and most successful local player in just about every form of organized soccer…men’s semi-professional, beach, co-ed, indoor and soccer tennis. Jaime’s passion for the game is unequal.

As one of the original founders of Saddleback United, Jaime has coached with the club since its inception. He coached the GU19 Strikers for 4 years earning two promotions and producing two collegiate players. He coached GU15 Rage for three years and led his BU10 Galaxy to a 3 rd place finish in its first year. His teams have won numerous league and tournament championships. But most importantly, Jaime has an exceptional ability to inspire a true love for the game with his players by mixing excellent training with a variety of extra-curricular activities like beach soccer, soccer tennis and unique interactions with professional and National Team players.

In additional, Jaime is highly regarded for his personal training. Over the last decade, Jaime has trained of some of the top youth players in Southern California. His specialty is teaching ball skills, creativity and striking…and inspiring players to find their passion for the game.


Erin Misaki

Erin is the Director of Coaching for Saddleback United's girls program. She was raised in Southern California. As a standout youth player, she played on the U-14, U16, U-18 and U-21 U.S. Youth National teams. As a youth national player, she had the opportunity to be coached by some of the best coaches in the US Soccer program including April Heinrich, Chris Petricelli and Jerry Smith.

Erin went on to play soccer at the University of Portland under the direction of the late Clive Charles. At Portland, Erin received All Conference Honor all four years and was a two time All American. In her senior year, her team won the NCAA Division I Championship, the University of Portland's first ever championship title.

After graduating from Portland, Erin drafted by the WUSA’s Philadelphia Charge, where she played for Mark Krikorian (head coach for Florida State and National Team staff coach). After the WUSA disbanded in 2004, Erin played professionally in Japan for Tokyo Verdy alongside many of Japan’s top players.

In addition to her playing experience, Erin has enjoyed coaching kids and being involved with youth sports since her freshman year in college. She coached for several years at Santa Clarita United including the U17 Premier team in 2009. In her first season at Saddleback United, Erin led the U16 Fense to a league championship.


STAFF COACHES


Colette Swensen

Colette grew up in New Jersey before attending Florida State University. At Florida State, Colette was a four year varsity letterman and participated in the NCAA Division 1 Final Four in three of her four years in college. she was the Team Captain (2006), was twice awarded the Christy Peacock Award for the hardest working player and on the Dean’s List in 2006 and 2007 for Academic performance.

After graduating from Florida State in 2007 (3.67 GPA in major), Colette played professionally in Finland for FC Kontu and was Captain for Central Delaware in the WPSL. Prior to joining Saddleback United, Colette coached for Team Boca Soccer Club and West Boca Raton High School. She was also a staff coach for the Mark Krikorian Soccer Academy and the Philadelphia Independence Youth Development program. Colette is also an Assistant Coach for UC Irvine. In her first year with UCI, Colette helped the team to its first Big West League Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division 1 Sweet 16.

Colette’s coaching mentors include Mark Krikorian (head coach at Florida State and USSF Staff Coach), Mick Statham (head coach at Lafayette University) and Erica Walsh (head coach at Penn State and assistant coach for US Women’s National Team). Colette has a USSF D License.


Katie Frattone

Katie is another Orange County native, growing up in San Juan Capistrano. She played for FC United for 8 years before getting a scholarship to play for Saint Mary’s College in Northern California. At Saint Mary’s, Katie was a four year letterman including Freshman of the Year, several All-Conference and All-Academic Team selections. Katie graduated from Saint Mary’s with a degree in Kinesiology in 2005 (3.56 GPA).

Since graduating, Katie has coached the JV Girls Teams at JSerra (2006 – 2009) and Santa Margarita Catholic High School (2009 – present). She has coached her high school teams to winning records in each of her first 5 seasons, including back to back Trinity League Championships at Santa Margarita. And she has coached club soccer with All-American Soccer Academy (2 years) and with the Julie Foudy Sports Leadership Academy (5 years).

Her coaching mentors are Paul Radcliffe (former women’s head coach at Saint Mary’s and current head coach at Stanford) and Chuck Morales. Off the field, Katie is a teacher and her mission with Saddleback United is to share her passion and knowledge of the game with the next generation.


Laura Lamb

Laura is an Orange County native, growing up in Huntington Beach. She was a standout player for F.V. Wolfpack for 8 years and played at Edison High School receiving a second-team All-Southern Section selection in 1995, and first-team All-Southern Section selection in 1996. She was a 1996 State and District Olympic Development Program player, receiving an athletic scholarship to UC Irvine in 1996, assisting the Anteaters to a 15-7 school record for victories in 1997 and a 3-2 victory in the 1997 Big West Conference tournament.

Prior to joining Saddleback United in 2010, Laura coached for Estancia High School and Newport Mesa Soccer club. Laura lives in Huntington Beach with her family and continues to play competitively for PSA Elite in the Orange County Women’s Soccer League.


Benoit David

Benoit was born in France, but was raised in Canberra Australia. As a youth player, Benoit played three years as a goal keeper on the Australian Youth National Futsal Team. Benoit came to the US in 2004 to attend United State International University in San Diego, where he was a four year varsity letterman.

After graduating from USIU, Benoit coached for two years with AS Beauvais-Oise in France where he also earned an advanced French Football Federation coaching degree (equivalent to a USSF B license). Benoit’s US coaching experience includes keeper coach Nott’s Forest FC in San Diego (2009), assistant coach at San Diego Mesa College (2009), assistant coach with Saddleback College (2010) and head coach at San Diego Jewish Academy (2009 – present).

Additionally, Benoit consults for Soccer United Marketing (program development & execution, program liaison for 2010 FIFA World Cup) and CONCACAF (team liaison and translator).


Suzy Strazzulla

Suzy grew up playing soccer in Florida. After an outstanding youth career as a goal keeper, Suzy accepted a scholarship offer from Cal State Fullerton, where she played four years earning Big West Conference Scholar Athlete recognition each year and graduating in 1998 on the Dean List with a degree in Kinesiology. Following college, Suzy played in the WUSA with the New York Power. She also played on a number of state and regional teams, and in the W-League and WPSL.

As a coach, Suzy has served as a goalkeeper and assistant coach for St. John’s University in New York and at Cal State Long Beach. And she has been a head coach for a number of Southern California club teams since 2004. Suzy has also coached for Capo Valley High and Edison High and she was an ODP Region IV Staff coach from 2008 – 2009.

Currently Suzy is working on a Master’s Degree in Sports Psychology at Cal State Fullerton and she is very active as personal goalkeeper coach.
